Overview
The School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University Singapore is seeking a Research Associate to support LanTERN (Language Evolution through Trees, Entropies, Reconstruction, and Networks), a project investigating the linguistic and cultural histories of East and Southeast Asia.
Responsibilities
Conduct independent research and participate in project events
Contribute to academic discussions and dissemination
Support data curation and tracking of project milestones
Assist with report preparation
Engage in both traditional and computational linguistic research as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team
Qualifications
A Master’s degree in linguistics or a relevant field
Strong interest in linguistics research, particularly in language evolution and endangered languages
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for liaison with internal and external stakeholders
Proficiency with data processing tools (Google Sheets, Excel) and office applications
Ability to work independently and manage tasks, while also collaborating within a team
Basic knowledge of data management practices (e.g., organizing and securely storing research materials) is an advantage
Prior experience in data management or multilingual research is advantageous
Experience in linguistics or multilingual research is preferred, though not required

Sample tasks (one at a time, varying by project):
Review and refine text, translations, and captions across general areas such as travel, food, lifestyle, and finance
Transcribe conversations and perform quality checks
Label or annotate voice, text, or image content
Review and correct AI-generated outputs
Assist in localizing content for AI models
What we’re looking for:
Near-native level proficiency in the Target Language and a strong command of English
Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
Prior experience in translation, editing, or related language tasks is preferred
