Position OverviewAs a Branch Head reporting to the Director of Food Science Rapid Response Department at the National Centre for Food Science , you will supervise three Specialist Teams in Food Microbiology, Food Virology, and Food Bioengineering, supporting SFA's food safety programmes, risk assessment, and outbreak investigations.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee daily operations of the three teams to ensure accurate and timely diagnostics for food safety, risk assessment, and outbreak investigation, coordinating across departments.
- Lead operational reviews and implement strategies to improve laboratory workflows, including automation and new diagnostic technologies.
- Stay updated on food safety regulatory developments in the specialist fields and provide scientific assessments to inform regulatory reviews.
- Mentor food scientists, guiding their professional development.
- Explore research grants, propose, and lead scientific research projects with stakeholders and collaborators.
- PhD in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, or microbial genomics.
- At least 5 years of experience supervising a diagnostic lab with ISO 17025 accreditation or leading a research group in related fields.
- Familiarity with international food safety standards and a strong publication record is advantageous.

The JobThis is a hands-on research role, ideal for someone with a PhD and early industry or postdoc experience . You'll be involved in both lab-based and strategic work - from running experiments to helping shape drug discovery projects. Some key areas you'll contribute to include:
- Designing and conducting lab and animal studies to explore how potential drug candidates work
- Supporting the screening of new antibody-based drugs
- Analysing data and drawing insights to guide next steps
- Contributing to scientific publications or patent filings
- Proposing new research ideas and mentoring junior teammates
We're keen to speak with scientists who have a strong foundation in pharmacology, cell biology, and molecular biology. You don't need to be an antibody expert, but an interest in biologics is a big plus.
- A PhD in Pharmacology, Life Sciences, or related field
- 1-3 years of experience in pharmaceutical or biomedical research (industry or academia welcome)
- Hands-on experience in cell-based experiments, including working with mammalian cells
- Familiar with molecular biology techniques like PCR, Western blotting, ELISA
- Some experience with in vivo models and flow cytometry would be great, but not essential
- Good communicator, team player, and someone who's curious and proactive

Research Assistant – Mid-size Molecule Unit
Job Scope:
· Peptide screening - ELISA, bead-based separation etc.
· DNA/RNA analysis - primer design, PCR, qPCR, purification (spin column, magnetic beads, ethanol precipitation, phenol chloroform extraction etc.), electrophoresis (Agarose gel, Urea-PAGE), NGS(Illumina) etc.
· Protein analysis - SDS-PAGE, western blotting, ELISA etc.
Requirements
· Lead identification screening in drug discovery
· Antibody, protein or peptide engineering
· Biopanning, such as phage display, SELEX, in vitro compartmentalization, microfluidics
· RNA-related analytics, protein purification, NGS data analysis, Biomek operation, etc.
· Degree in Biomedical Science/Biochemistry/Chemical Biology/Biotechnology/Molecular Biotechnology with 1-2 years of working experience in a related field.
