Underwriter Manager, Marine
As the Underwriting Manager - Marine, you will be responsible for growing the Marine lines portfolio and developing strong relationships with brokers and key partners. Your role involves making quality underwriting decisions within local authority and collaborating with local and national teams to execute strategies for the Singapore Marine lines portfolio. A strong knowledge of the marine insurance industry, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a proven sales ability are essential for delivering high-quality service and building lasting relationships with clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Underwriting
Control, monitoring and underwriting acceptance for the classes designated, in cooperation, where necessary, with the Managing Director in accordance with specific HDI mandate.
Territory: ASEAN and Middle East
- Underwrite Marine business in accordance with the company's philosophy and Underwriting Guidelines.
- Maintenance of an intimate knowledge of all business sources to ensure underwriting decisions are based on all pertinent criteria.
- Visits to client locations for purposes of risk assessment, risk and loss control and information gathering purposes.
- Conduct underwriting reviews of HDI Marine portfolio in Asia Pacific in order to ensure proficiency and compliance with the company's objectives, instructions, guidelines and reinsurance arrangements.
- Involve Loss Control / Risk Engineering Service as required.
Marketing
Coordination and implementation of a marketing strategy for underwriting classes under control, in cooperation with the Managing Director.
- Execution of marketing philosophy to clients and brokers.
- Attendance at appropriate conferences, seminars, discussion groups, meetings and involvement with industry bodies as considered beneficial to the company and after approval from the Managing Director.
- Coordination of internal training courses/ seminars for external clients in cooperation with management team.
- Interstate and Overseas travel as considered necessary with approval of the Managing Director.
- Research and Development of new Marine products to meet the customers' needs.
Management
- Input in respect to premium, loss ratio, budgets and including distribution sources and growth forecast, quarterly in cooperation with the Managing Director.
- Input to Monthly Management report relative to market conditions, underwriting, new business opportunities, quotations won/lost.
- Preparation of appropriate reports on portfolio performance (develop growth strategies and pipelines for target markets).
- Involvement in weekly underwriting/trading meeting with all other Product Managers to review business written and overall philosophy.
- Actively support all other lines offered by HDI.
- Training of staff in the Marine Insurance class.
- Periodic reports as required for local and overseas management.
Administration
- Completion of appropriate underwriting worksheets, premium calculation detail and risk information for systems input.
- Preparation/ maintenance and overview of all underwriting files, slips and policy wordings.
Reinsurance
- Ensure that risks underwritten conform to Marine treaties scope of cover.
- Place facultative reinsurance, subject to approval, as required with company approved professional reinsurers.
- Seek and obtain any special acceptance under the Marine reinsurance treaties where required by nature of the risks being insured by the company.
- Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines.
- Apply approved Marine Department rating model as a guide as part of the rating / pricing underwriting process.
Key Competencies Required
• Has a minimum of 10 years insurance experience
• Has appropriate formal qualifications
• Demonstrated knowledge of the marine insurance industry.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proven sales ability with a strong emphasis on customer service.
• Passion for delivering excellent service and building lasting relationships.
