Role overview:
We are recruiting a Support Worker to provide day-to-day care and therapeutic support for youth with special needs in a residential setting. The role involves close, hands-on support for residents, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and those with limited verbal communication.
Key responsibilities:
- Shadow assigned resident(s) during daily routines and provide structured support for youths with ASD, including implementation of visual schedules and sensory regulation strategies.
- Assist with personal care for low-functioning residents and support mobility needs when required.
- Plan and run recreational and enrichment activities adapted for different functioning levels; facilitate small-group activities that promote social and life skills.
- Accompany residents for approved community activities, managing transitions and potential environmental triggers.
- Contribute to Individual Care Plans (ICPs), collaborate with therapists and specialists, document behavioural observations and progress, and assist with behaviour-management strategies.
- Implement therapeutic techniques advised by specialists, use appropriate communication supports (e.g., PECS, visual aids), and apply crisis prevention/de-escalation approaches.
- Perform any other duties required by the unit.
Requirements:
- Diploma or Degree from a recognised instituition.
- At least 1 year's relevant experience working with youth with special needs, particularly ASD, including experience with non-verbal children and managing aggressive behaviours.
- Knowledge of developmental disabilities and behavioural management strategies.
- Ability to remain calm in challenging situations and physically assist residents when needed.
- Strong observation, documentation and teamwork skills.
