Space Systems Engineer - Space Laser Communications
The Space Systems Engineer at Transcelestial is responsible for the systems development for a novel, miniature space-based laser communication terminal. This position is part of the Space Team, led by Dr. Jan Smisek ( This position will also interact with the rest of the hardware, manufacturing and software design teams to assist with the overall development of the optical systems and new optical alignment technologies.
As Space Systems Engineer, You Will
Design and validate mechanical and thermal subsystems, including CAD modeling, vibration analysis, and thermal simulations for space and optical payloads.
Lead systems engineering activities for space-based laser communication terminals, including requirements definition, interface control, and performance analysis (pointing error budgets, power, communications link budgets, mass, and thermal margins).
Participate in and manage Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) procedures, ensuring successful environmental qualification and payload integration into client satellite buses.
Perform mission and orbital analysis to inform design decisions and coordinate terminal operations with Transcelestial Mission Operations & Ground Segment (TMOGS) teams.
What You Will Bring
Degree in Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience
2+ years of systems engineer experience, preferably in aerospace or satellite missions
Proven ability to work autonomously while collaborating in international, multidisciplinary teams.
Strong technical communication, documentation, and time management skills.
Extensive knowledge of spacecraft subsystems and ability to translate requirements into engineering solutions.
Hands-on experience in mechanical design, vibration analysis, and thermal simulations for aerospace systems.
It Is a Bonus If You Have
Full lifecycle experience on a satellite mission or space optical payload.
Satellite or optical payload assembly, integration, and test (AIT) experience.
Expertise in one or more of the following: AOCS/GNC, optics, mechanical design, electronics for space, control engineering, or signal processing.
Proficiency with tools such as STK, GMAT, SPENVIS, MATLAB/Simulink, SolidWorks, Zemax, LTspice, Python, Valispace.
Experience working in a high-growth or startup environment.
