Directs the maintenance and repair of Antarctic equipment.
Functions as recognized technical expert in the field of Antarctic equipment maintenance and repair.
Performs extremely complex repairs on a broad range of equipment in the shop and in the field.

Responsible for the training and development of the crew assigned, to include a healthy safety culture and an environment of technical competence and professional execution of a world-class maintenance program.

Operates heavy equipment for assigned traverse for no less than a 50-day duration to the South Pole and back at least once max twice .

Field Camps Only:
Diagnoses troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains construction, agriculture and heavy support equipment.
Diagnoses troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains small engines and diesel fired heaters.
Performs service, maintenance, repairs and overhauls in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations .
Analyzes and diagnoses mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, and electronic faults.
Live and work in close quarters for the duration of the field season in a remote camp setting.
Operates heavy equipment for assigned traverse or camp.
Lifts, moves and/or installs heavy parts and assemblies safely, using basic tooling and PPE. May perform work outside in severe weather conditions.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
High School diploma or GED
Minimum of ten years of experience in machinery trades, including small engine, automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, or relevant mechanical experience is required .
Two of the ten years’ experience must be in a s upervisory or leadership position.
Expected Skills and Competencies:
Knowledge of sound mechanical practices as applied to commercial and special purpose equipment, using chemicals and tools, methods of handling heavy mechanisms, internal combustion engines and electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
Team player and group dynamics are of the utmost importance .
Preferred:
Two years training at a technical school is preferred.
Physical and/or Other Requirements :
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

• In summer, responsible for day-to-day shop operations. In winter, responsible for the operation and supervision of the winter-over operations of the MEC.

• Performs maintenance, diagnosis and repair of generators and small equipment. Performs diagnosis and repair of snowmobiles, ATVs.
• Performs rebuilds on engines, drive trains or components of equipment.
• Provides training for personnel on the safe use of the above equipment.
• Provides training in operation and field maintenance to grantees and support personnel.
• Performs on-site work to equipment in field as required.
• Provides training as needed to mechanics.
• Documents all work performed and maintains pertinent records.
• Assesses suitability of equipment to grantee needs, designing and implementing modifications and custom fabrications as required.
• Operates and maintains shop equipment, including welders, compressors, presses, etc.
• Maintains adequate supply of spare parts and tools, in coordination with the materials person.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

• Proficient using Microsoft Office Word; ability to accurately document changes to work orders and inventory on a computer-based system.

Responsible for accomplishing corrective maintenance as outlined by VMF Supervisor.
Directs the work of VMF staff engaged in the repair and upkeep of mobile and stationary equipment, associated tooling and materials, and supporting parts stock.
Ensures work request priorities are completed and adjusts tasking as required to meet urgent needs.
Coordinates work orders and assigns personnel to specific tasks.
Executes and/or monitors all in-progress work to ensure quality, timely completion and control of material.
Documents work order progress and communicates issues with customers, Service Writer, and VMF Supervisor.
Maintains records of shop activities, on both individual work orders and permanent technical documentation (printed shop manuals i.e. Caterpillar, Canadian Foremost, some Ford manuals, etc ).
Prepares and submits reports on the progress of all work projects.
Writes end-of-season performance evaluations on the heavy and light equipment technicians, and the technician assistant.
