RESPONSIBILITIES

Applications are invited for the appointment of Librarian/Senior Librarian at the SMU Libraries, Singapore Management University (SMU).

SMU Libraries seeks a collaborative, proactive, and knowledgeable professional for the role of Librarian/Senior Librarian who will be part of the Instruction and Learning Team to partner relevant stakeholders for course-integrated instruction and out-of-classroom learning. The position holder will provide research support, instruction, and collection development services focused onbut not exclusivelybusiness, economics, finance, and data-related fields.

Librarians/Senior Librarians work across teams within the Libraries to contribute to the development of a range of services designed to deliver instructional and learning programmes, increase research visibility, and facilitate access to resources. This includes collaborating with other librarians, faculty, and across the University to develop and teach information and digital literacy programmes and metaliteracies that contribute to academic and learning success, provide research support and advice, build, and manage collections, and conduct advocacy and outreach activities and programmes through engagement.

The position holder is expected to actively contribute to innovative initiatives as well as lead and/or serve as a member of taskforces, project teams or committees.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in library and information science from an university with a minimum of two years' working experience in an academic library.
  • Proven ability to design, deliver and assess information and digital literacy programmes and instruction for individuals and groups at various levels.
  • Understanding of pedagogical and learning methodologies and principles.
  • Understanding of research issues, such as open access, publishing, and research visibility and impact in the academia environment, including where relevant to the legal discipline.
  • Experience with data analysis packages e.g., statistical packages and survey analysis packages is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to continuously innovate services and processes, particularly using current and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders, particularly faculty and students.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and facilitation/teaching skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable and contribute to a diverse team of staff in a dynamic environment.

We are seeking a talented and motivated individual to join our team as a Librarian Staff member in the User Services and Spaces department. In this role, you will play a key part in delivering exceptional service desk duties that align with our library's high standards of excellence.

  • You will be responsible for providing efficient and high-quality service desk services during designated weekday evening and weekend opening hours.
  • Your tasks will include supervising collection maintenance activities to ensure optimal resource accessibility.
  • You will operate the Alma Library Management System effectively and efficiently.
  • Another key aspect of your role will be to analyze current library processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • You will train, guide, and lead a pool of student assistants on delivering library operational tasks and procedures.
  • You will monitor and provide timely feedback on user spaces in the libraries in terms of cleanliness and condition.
  • Troubleshooting and maintaining library equipment will also be part of your responsibilities.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a bachelor's degree or diploma in any field and have a minimum of 3 years' work experience in customer service-related industry.

  • You should be proficient in MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • You should have experience in operations, customer service, or communications roles in academic libraries or large libraries.
  • You should have experience in executing innovation-driven or process improvements projects.
  • You should have experience in developing communication plans or stakeholder management in the education industry.
  • You should have a service-oriented mindset with a focus on customer service.
  • You should have strong communication skills in customer interactions, presentations to stakeholders, and training delivery.
  • You should be organized and detail-oriented with the ability to analyze processes and identify areas for improvement.
  • You should be able to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • You should be able to adapt and thrive in rapidly changing, complex, and ambiguous environments.
  • Familiarity with library management systems and some knowledge in data analysis will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in Project Management will be an added advantage.

Working Hours

Mondays to Thursdays: 8:30 am to 5:45 pm

Friday: 8:30 am to 5:15 pm

Deliver after-office-hours (AOH) services during weekday and weekend opening hours:

  1. Weekdays (estimated once a week)

Monday to Thursday: 2:45 pm – 9:45 pm

Friday: 3:30 pm – 9:45 pm

Saturday (estimated once a month): 8:15 am – 5:15 pm

AOH services are also available on Sundays from 9:15 am – 4:30 pm at pre- and during examination periods, which will be communicated in advance through duty rosters.

What you will be working on:

  • Contribute to strategic collection development and management to build a relevant and comprehensive Singapore and Southeast Asia collection
  • Build and enhance national collection (Singapore and Southeast Asia) by collecting, evaluating & researching as well as documenting primary materials of established Singapore history and heritage.
  • Plan and implement quality content creation, curation and outreach activities to promote National Library's collections
  • Deliver in-depth reference services for specialized areas such as answering reference / research enquiries and provision of research assistance to researchers. (e.g. Research Fellows and Consult-A-Librarian Service).
  • Guide users and staff on use of library resources including planning and conduct of library user education /instructional programs, particularly in areas of specialization.
  • Produce authoritative resource aids for users of all capabilities, especially researchers from leading institutions.
  • Implement and monitor networking, collaboration and engagement with communities to grow the National Library's existing networks and resources
  • Establish and manage contacts with local, regional and international experts in area of subject specialization as well as nurture new avenues of community contact.
  • Curate and conduct guided tours of the National Library visitors and peers from local and overseas institutions and showcase the National Library's collections and services
  • Implement operational and project management for organizational success


What we are looking for:

  • 2-5 years of working experience
  • Possess knowledge in local history and heritage; good research skills and familiar with Singapore content related publishing output.
  • Good project management, organizational, communication and writing skills.
  • Strong interest in library services with good inter-personal skills and networking abilities
  • Able to interpret the information needs of users and clients with good working knowledge of digital content and online platforms.
  • Good communication and inter-personal skills
  • Team Player, meticulous and analytical
  • Able to speak & write in Tamil Language. As the incumbent will be curating content and handling Tamil collections, proficiency in Tamil is also required.
  • Required to perform shift work and work on weekends, when necessary.

To provide dedicated research support and specialized library services to the Faculty of Law at NUS, enhancing legal research capabilities, supporting curriculum delivery, and ensuring access to a robust and relevant legal collection, the Law Librarian will play a key role in developing and teaching legal research programs, offering customized research consultations, and fostering interdisciplinary initiatives that align with NUS Libraries’ mission to drive impactful research and quality education.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop and build partnerships with NUS Faculty of Law to provide library programmes and services
• Develop, implement and assess and manage the legal research programmes including teaching the legal research component of the Year 1 legal research and writing course, advanced legal research in Upper Year or graduate research tutorials.
• Provide customized research consultations, workshops and talks for different user groups
• Develop and implement new interdisciplinary or library wide programmes and services
• Develop and maintain a robust and relevant legal collection to meet the teaching and research needs of NUS
• Create and update learning resources such as library research guides and digital learning objects to accelerate self-directed learning
• Establish partnership with stakeholders to deliver library programmes in curriculum and research in innovative ways such as incorporating existing and emerging technology and tools in teaching and learning
• Strong understanding of research matters such as open access, publishing trends, and research visibility and impact in the context of higher education
• Keep abreast of trends and developments by participating in professional development activities and contributing to librarianship through writing and presenting on various platforms
• Work together with colleagues from other library clusters to drive cross-cluster collaborations and projects to enhance library services, innovation, knowledge transfer for impact
• Lead / Contribute to the strategic growth and development of NUS Libraries' services, spaces and collection
• Other related tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications


• Degree in Law (L.L.B. or J.D) is required.
• Postgraduate Degree in Library and Information Science/Management is preferred but not essential.
• Proven ability to design, deliver and evaluate library programmes for individuals and groups at different levels.
• Advanced knowledge of major legal research tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw and multidisciplinary academic databases.
• Strong understanding of the legal research process and effective use of print and electronic sources of law.
• Prior experience in an academic library or research setting is an advantage.
• Familiarity with performing legal research in an academic, court, or law firm setting is highly desirable.
• Strong attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.
• An enthusiastic team player with a genuine interest in law librarianship.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, library users and other stakeholders.
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable in working with a diverse team of staff in a dynamic environment.
