About The Role

  • To drive and support legal digitalization initiatives and legal operations optimisation projects. (15%)
  • Perform other responsibilities and duties assigned by General Counsel in order to meet any other business needs for legal support, advice and/or coordination with various stakeholders from AIA Group Office and other AIA affiliates. (15%)

Requirements


  • A law degree from a recognized university.
  • At least 8 years PQE, of which at least 4 were spent in practice/at a law firm.
  • Experience in IT/technology and cybersecurity issues essential. In-house experience at a regulated financial institution in Singapore ideal but optional.
  • Familiar with local laws/regulations applicable to the financial/insurance industry in Singapore, in particular those on technology risk, cybersecurity, cyber-hygiene, data protection and outsourcing guidelines and applicable best practices.
  • Admitted to the Singapore Bar, and of good standing. Candidates who are not Singapore-qualified but with common law qualifications and strong familiarity with Singapore regulatory/legal requirements on cybersecurity and data privacy will be considered.
  • Strong problem-solving aptitude and attitude – willingness and ability to quickly pinpoint issues and work with relevant stakeholders to resolve.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills - ability to present advice/opinions and business solutions in a clear and concise manner.
  • Affable and firmly confident demeanour – able to connect and collaborate well with stakeholders from different technical backgrounds and across different levels of seniority.

Your Role

Background / Qualifications

  • Education: Law degree or equivalent professional qualification with a minimum of 5–8 years of law firm or relevant in-house legal experience.
  • Expertise: Legal knowledge of Singapore and other ASEAN countries, with Korean legal knowledge a strong advantage.
  • Experience: Direct negotiation experience in complex and large technology transactions is strongly desirable.

Skills:

  • A “can-do” attitude with the ability to lead cross-functional teams under pressure while balancing competing priorities and risks.
  • Knowledge of cloud, collaboration, hybrid work, or software industries, as well as expertise in anti-trust, anti-corruption (e.g., FCPA), or public procurement laws.
  • Familiarity with Splunk’s business, Cisco’s technologies, or channel/reseller-based selling models is desirable.

  • Provision of legal advice on distribution issues in connection with the firm’s South East Asian business (with a primary focus on Singapore).

Institutional Business

  • Advise on legal and regulatory issues relating to institutional funds and separate accounts and other matters like marketing of such funds in connection with the institutional business.
  • Draft, review, negotiate and advise on legal agreements including investment management agreements and advisory agreements.
  • Advise on, and draft and review agreements relating to, the establishment and maintenance of institutional funds.

Corporate and Operational Legal Matters

Ad-hoc Projects

Required Qualifications

  • Qualified as a lawyer in Singapore
  • At least 2-3 years of PQE in a major law firm, financial institution or both with a background in fund management
  • Excellent command of written English with good drafting skills
  • Read and write another Asian language is a plus
  • Majority experience in funds work (retail or private) is strongly preferred, some experience in labour, IP / IT and digital related contracts is a plus
  • Some experience working on cross-border matters and working across different cultures
  • Familiar with the Singapore outsourcing framework.

What we look for:

  • M1 or M2 law degree in commercial or civil law.
  • Licensed or qualified practice law in France.
  • 5+ years of experience practicing law at a law firm and/or in-house, preferably in the technology space.
  • Fluent in both English and French.
  • Fast learner, highly adaptable, and comfortable navigating ambiguity.

Job Description

You will be responsible for the following:

Conduct legal research

Drafting legal contracts and negotiating the terms of the contract

Ensure regulatory compliance

Documenting SOPs and identification of gaps between SOPS

Ensuring best company practises and good corporate governance

Data Protection Officer

Incorporating companies in new markets and ensuring compliance with the local regulatory requirements thereafter

Merger and acquisition + performing due diligence

Liaising with regulatory authorities on new regulatory requirements

Various ad hoc tasks

Requirements

Degree in Law or equivalent

Proven experience as a legal counsel in a business/SME environment

Excellent knowledge and understanding of corporate law and procedures

Full comprehension of the influences of the external environment of a corporation

Demonstrated ability to create legal defensive or proactive strategies

High degree of professional ethics and integrity

Sound judgement and ability to analyse situations and information

Excellent communication and analytical skills
