Security Software Engineer, Security Engineering — ByteDance
We are part of the Security Engineering team responsible for supporting the construction of security capabilities and platform services, combining cross-functional teams to create efficient and high-quality security solutions, enhancing user experience and reducing barriers to understanding and using security services.
Responsibilities
Research, design, develop, test, maintain and continuously improve ByteDance's product security & privacy infrastructure and related software.
Analyze user needs and security & privacy objectives; develop software solutions applying principles of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis.
Update software and enhance existing capabilities. Develop and direct testing and validation procedures to optimize reliability, availability and performance of globally distributed systems.
Work with cross-functional global teams to integrate hardware and software systems and develop specifications and performance requirements to deliver high-quality work in rapid product development.
Deploy, troubleshoot and operate large distributed systems.
Manage individual project priorities, deadlines and deliverables.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or other relevant majors.
Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
Proficiency in at least one server framework (e.g., Express, Koa, Gin, Django) and at least one database (e.g., MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, Hive, ClickHouse, Elasticsearch).
Familiarity with load-balancing, containerization, NGINX, Docker, Kubernetes, Serverless, etc.
Proficiency in TypeScript, CSS, and at least one general-purpose language (e.g., Node.js).
Understanding of component-based development and familiarity with React.js, Vue.js, or equivalent.
Strong programming, debugging, and optimization skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

About the Team

As part of the Security Engineering team, we are responsible for supporting the company's construction of security capabilities and platform services, combining other teams to create efficient and high-quality service docking capabilities, enhancing interactive experience, and lowering the user's barriers to understanding and using security services.

Responsibilities

1. Design and implement the security maintenance framework for the company's security infrastructure, and build cutting-edge SRE technologies for system deployment, upgrade, capacity planning and rapid troubleshooting and disaster recovery.

2. Design and develop the SRE infrastructure and maintenance tools for the full lifecycle of security system development; support the rapid iteration and system reliability for the company's security services.

3. Improve the automation and the intelligence of the SRE infrastructure and evolve it into a platform, and improve the overall reliability and efficiency of the company's security systems.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related fields, with minimum 3 years of relevant experience.

2. Solid programming skills, mastering at least one of the programming skills such as Go/Java/Python, and being able to deliver high quality code.

3. Familiar with at least one of the web frameworks, such as Gin/Django/Spring, with a decent understanding of their design principles.

4. Deep understanding of Linux OS, sound knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, with good exposure to network, storage, as well as computer architecture.

5. Familiar with cloud native framework with experience in Kubernetes. Good experience with SRE tools such as Ansible, Argo CD, Promethues, and Grafana.

6. Passionate about self-studying cutting edge technologies and staying relevant. Strong communication and collaboration skills, and willing to take ownership.

As Cybersecurity Researcher, being part of the global Threat Research Unit, you will be fighting against modern cyber threats and cybercriminals by dissecting complex campaigns, reverse engineering malicious content, and creating detection logic for Acronis products. As an expert in cyber threats, you will participate in the development of new threat detection technologies, including various automation and machine learning methods.
What You’ll Do
Participate in design and implementation of detection capabilities of Acronis Security and EDR products.
Analyse clean and malicious content: executables, scripts, various document formats, websites, memory dumps, vulnerabilities.
Develop, support, and fine‐tune threat detection logic and signatures.
Conduct online research of the latest cyber threats and ensure those can be detected by existing in‐house technologies.
Contribute to sharing research results in blog posts and articles.
Monitor automated detection pipelines to ensure high detection accuracy.
Support scan engine and product development by participating in joint research projects.
What You Bring (Experience & Qualifications)
Understanding of modern cyber‐attack techniques, common types of malware, OS internals (primarily Windows, macOS and Linux is a plus), and network protocols.
5+ years experience in malware analysis (executables, scripts, document formats, exploits): static (e.g. IDA Pro, Ghidra), dynamic (e.g. x64dbg, OllyDBG), and behavioral (e.g. Cuckoo, CAPE).
3+ years experience with proactive Threat Hunting (using multiple EDR/XDR solutions).
Network traffic analysis (Wireshark).
Extensive experience working with threat intelligence tools and services: VirusTotal, Shodan, Censys, MISP (or similar feed collections), analysis with MITRE ATT&CK framework.
3+ years experience working for a well‐established security vendor.
Software development experience: Python, REST APIs, SQL, Regular expressions. C/C++ would be considered a plus.
Flexibility and proven ability to learn new things and develop skills fast. Analysis, critical thinking, and problem‐solving skills. Unbeatable curiosity.
Good reading and writing skills in English.

The security engineering team's first responsibility is to respond to emerging threats and aim to secure the open source ecosystem for community and enterprise use. Your work will improve the security of millions of people, by addressing potential CVEs and vulnerabilities alongside the lifecycle of Canonical products such as Ubuntu. You will engage directly with our community and customers, as well as coordinating efforts across multiple engineering teams and projects to make this happen.
An Engineering Manager is responsible for line management and career guidance. The ability to develop engineering talent, to represent your team and product from a technical perspective, and to drive collaboration with other teams and customers are all critical to success in this role.
What you will do in this role
Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior
Provide technical guidance on vulnerability remediation
Drive the development of new security engineering projects
Work with upstream open source projects on vulnerability lifecycle handling
Coach, mentor, and offer career development feedback
Identify and measure team health indicators
Implement disciplined engineering processes
Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers
Develop and evangelise great engineering and organisational practices
Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects
Be an active part of the security engineering leadership team, collaborating with other leaders
What we are looking for in you
An exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path
Drive, and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
A love of developing and growing people and a track record of it
Organised and able to ensure your team delivers timely, high quality results
Professional manner interacting with colleagues, partners, and community
Solid background in software development, including expertise in support and maintenance
Mastery in any programming language (Go, Java, C, Python, .)
Knowledgeable and passionate about software and application security
Solid experience working in an agile development environment
A demonstrated drive for continual learning
Builds trust, relationships and confidence
Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each
