Laboratory Support Specialist

The Laboratory Support Specialist is responsible for performing various tasks in the laboratory, including cleaning and washing duties, chemical and solution preparation, equipment operation, material preparation, housekeeping, and waste management.

Job Title: Science Lab Assistant

The ideal candidate will possess strong laboratory management skills and be able to multitask effectively.

The science lab assistant will play a vital role in supporting the science teachers and ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratory.

Key responsibilities include:

• Preparation and provision of apparatus, equipment, and other teaching materials and equipment for lessons as requested by the science teachers.• Collect and clear away equipment and other teaching material after the lesson, including safely disposing of waste and washing up apparatus• Check for faulty and damaged equipment after each lesson, report to the science teacher and or HOD (as appropriate), and repair if possible• Liaise with TA to keep IT equipment including desktops, notebooks, visualisers, and projectors in working condition• Check and replenish first aid box/kit • Distribute desk copies and science materials to teachers• Stock management involves preparing an inventory of stocks twice a year, liaising with the HOD to replenish consumables, keeping a stock book, and record breakage and making replacements• Special activities include maintaining any exhibits placed inside the lab and various parts of the school, supporting teachers in matters relating to practical assessments, helping in preparations for any science exhibition, and providing support to science teachers and the HOD in any other related matters

The ideal candidate will have:

Contract Period: 2 years (2026 to 2027) with an option to extend for another year (2028).

Workng hours (Total 21 hours per week):

· Mondays to Thursdays: 8:00am to 12:15pm (morning) or 1:00pm to 5:15pm (afternoon)

· Fridays: 8:00am to 12:00pm (morning) or 1:00pm to 5:00pm (afternoon)

· Lunch: Nil

· Service not required on weekends and gazetted public holidays

· Overtime work shall be paid according to the Ministry of Manpower guidelines.

Scope of Work:

Cleaning and Washing Duties:

· Wash and clean laboratory glassware and apparatus, both manually and using machines

· Perform soaking and washing of lab glassware according to designated room requirements

· Wash and soak glassware/apparatus used for cigarette testing, clean ashtray, cartridge and holder

· Work with diluted acids for soaking/cleaning apparatus/glassware

· Perform general cleaning of centrifuge, sonicator, fume cupboards

Chemical and Solution Preparation:

· Prepare cleaning solutions (detergents) and refill solvent bottles

· Handle and decant solvent from primary container (~25kg) into secondary containers

· Prepare bleach dilution solutions according to lab Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

· Prepare and neutralise bleach according to lab Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

Equipment Operation and Material Preparation:

· Operate simple equipment (glassware washer, autoclave, oven, Ultrapure water systems)

· Prepare consumables for autoclaving and laboratory processes

· Assist in preparing materials and containers for case work

· Refill consumables such as pipette tips, gloves

Housekeeping and Waste Management:

· Perform general housekeeping (cleaning and tidying of cupboards, ovens, refrigerators, freezers)

· Sweeping and mopping of floors

· Clear general waste, chemical, biohazard and cytotoxic waste bins

· Handle and sort bulk and heavy laboratory consumables

Administrative and Qualification Requirements:

· Basic administrative duties (monitoring temperatures, dispatching reports, document handling, data entry)

Qualifications, skills and experience:

· Preferably with prior experience in laboratory settings, particularly in the washing and

cleaning of laboratory glassware and apparatus;

· Preferably with prior knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and proper handling of laboratory equipment;

Job Title: Laboratory Support Specialist

The laboratory support specialist will assist teaching staff in the following areas:

• Prepare and set up apparatus and resources for science lessons.
• Be present during lessons and provide assistance to teachers during demonstrations or group work. Facilitate activities in small groups.
• Monitor resources and make recommendations for effective lesson planning. Test resources and share findings with colleagues or subject leaders.
• Record items that need to be purchased during preparation, ensuring efficient use of resources.
• Conduct stocktakes of apparatus and materials, and dispose of redundant items. Inform relevant staff members to replenish necessary items.
• Enhance the appearance of science rooms by displaying charts and student work.
• Support mathematics and science departments in after-school programs for students participating in Olympiads and E2K initiatives.
• Develop teaching and learning resources, such as cutting materials, laminating, creating signage for science gardens, and organizing butterfly kits and seed kits by class.
• Accompany students on learning journeys.
• Maintain school gardens, including watering plants, composting, and hydroponics.
• Clean and maintain science rooms.

The laboratory support specialist may also be required to perform any other duties assigned by the school administration.
