Major Functions:

As the Volunteer Programme and Public Engagement Intern, you will be responsible for supporting the Volunteer Team in providing online and in person engagement to the public, community groups, schools, and support our citizen science programmes. Assist in identifying trends and insights, conduct or supervise market research to identify new opportunities to engage our audience.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Volunteer Programme

  • Support recruitment and selection of volunteers for the Cyber Spotter Programme (CS). This includes screening, shortlisting of volunteers and maintaining a database of volunteers.

  • Support the development of the CS programme. This includes managing complex project schedules, assisting in project training, conducting agreeance checks and data analysis.

  • Develop, or assist in supervising the development of learning and engagement content; support in managing external vendors and agencies to deliver high-quality content.

  • Assist in monitoring inquiries and responding to or escalating them as necessary.

  • Support project management, review of feedback, reports and proposals.

  • Maintain a volunteer database and prepare for their regular engagement.

  • Support and run the annual volunteer engagement sessions.

  • Draft and edit emails for various purposes, such as volunteer recruitment, event invitations and newsletters

  • Assist with social media management (WWF-Volunteer Telegram Account)

Public engagement

  • Assist with co-ordinating and eventually lead public engagement in nature areas.

  • Assist with the running of volunteer programmes such as invasive species removal and biodiversity monitoring.

  • Engage with other teams within WWF Singapore to develop engagement content, communications and outreach.

  • Conduct public talks on environmental issues for schools, corporates, etc.

  • Conduct literature review, data-base management and data mining from websites or documents from various sources

  • Develop resources and manage logistics for public outreach

  • Perform other related duties as needed to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the Education and Outreach team.

Social Media

  • Gather and verify information on conservation topics, wildlife, and nature to support accurate and engaging content creation.

  • Assist in compiling and analysing social media performance reports to track growth, engagement, and content effectiveness.

  • Assist in ideating, drafting, and filming engaging content across WWF-Singapore's social media platforms.

  • Research trends, topics, and creative formats to develop fresh and impactful storytelling ideas.

  • Extract insights from teams to craft engaging and shareable conservation and sustainability content.

Requirements:

  • Degree preferably in Education, Communications, Business, Environmental Science or related field. Individuals without a degree but extensive Volunteer management, and community engagement experience are welcome to apply.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences.

  • Has experience in project management, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

  • Detail oriented and flexibility to work on other projects as needed

  • Interested in environmental and sustainability issues

  • Comfortable working in outdoor environments

  • Knowledge on local biodiversity

  • Passionate about conservation and driving real impact

This is a full-time, paid internship with a duration of 6 months.

The Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), together with the Earth Observatory of Singapore, is looking for a Research Fellow to make an important contribution to the research project: “Climate Transformation Program (CTP): Cross Cutting Theme 1 – Sustainable Societies” funded by the MOE Tier 3C Grant. CTP aims to develop, inspire, and accelerate knowledge-based solutions and educate future leaders to establish the stable climate and environment necessary for resilient, just, and sustainable Southeast Asian societies.
CTP will generate knowledge and innovation across disciplines including climate and Earth science, ecology, materials science, artificial intelligence, humanities, social sciences and the arts, finance, health, and engineering. It will also translate state-of-the-art scientific results into real world solutions for Singapore, and it will transfer these solutions to Southeast Asia (SEA) and beyond.
As part of this programme, “Cross-cutting theme 1: Sustainable Societies”, this theme will leverage climate research in communication, public opinion and psychology, and artistic impressions to shape public attitudes and behaviours towards climate change issues. The Research Fellow will work directly with the PI of the Sustainable Societies theme, Professor Shirley Ho, based in the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at NTU.
Key Responsibilities
To engage in conducting literature searches and manuscript preparation.
To develop and implement a five-wave survey with the public.
To conduct statistical analyses with survey data.
To engage in VR app development and implementation.
To engage in experiment conceptualization, design, and implementation.

To contribute to research publications and presentations.
To write progress report and final research report.
To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.

This project explores how communication influences public understanding and acceptance of novel food technologies in Singapore.

About the Project:

“UNIQUE” (U nderstanding Diverse Dietary Groups’ Perceptions and AcceptaN ce of Novel Foods I n Singapore: A QU alitative InvE stigation) investigates how diverse dietary groups in Singapore—such as vegetarians, non-vegetarians, and individuals with or without food allergies—perceive novel foods, including plant-based, cultivated, and genetically modified foods. Using evidence-based, qualitative research methods, the project aims to understand the psychological, sociocultural, and media-related factors shaping these perceptions, as well as to identify and address common misperceptions. Findings will inform public communication strategies and contribute to communicating novel food technologies in Singapore.

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Assistant will support the team in various aspects of the project, including but not limited to:

  • Assist in the design and coordination of focus group discussions and other qualitative data collection activities.
  • Support in recruiting and screening of participants representing diverse dietary groups.
  • Conduct literature reviews and compile relevant academic and media materials on novel foods and food technology communication.
  • Transcribe, organize, and conduct preliminary coding and thematic analysis of qualitative data.
  • Assist in the preparation of research reports, presentations, and publications .
  • Manage administrative tasks related to IRB applications, scheduling, and logistics .
  • Support the development of communication materials (e.g., infographics, social media content) to disseminate research findings.

Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Psychology, Sociology, Social Science, or a related social science or humanities field.
