The Challenges

You will be responsible for providing the basic and advance respiratory care services to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities in the cardio pulmonary system. You will be responsible in planning, implementing and evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services, emergency services and special procedures in the Intensive Care Units for patients to assist physicians in the diagnosis and management of patients with cardio-respiratory diseases and related disorders. Some of the respiratory therapy procedures that you will perform include management of patients on mechanical ventilator, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, assist in endotracheal intubation, arterial blood gas sampling and analysis, assist in bronchoscopy procedure, etc. You will also participate in the ward rounds with the medical team to review and discuss appropriate respiratory therapy for the patients.

Other duties include providing education and training to other members of the healthcare team, students and patients as needed as well as basic maintenance and troubleshooting of RT equipments. You can also expect to contribute towards continuous quality improvement in the department and provide guidance to trainees and students.

Overview

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services, emergency services, and other procedures in the Intensive Care Units, High Dependency Units, and General Wards. He/she will assist the physicians in the diagnosis and management of patients with cardio-respiratory diseases and related orders.

Respiratory Therapists specialise in providing care and treatment for patients who have lung and breathing-related problems. They work closely with doctors to assess, monitor and treat patients with asthma, pneumonia, lung conditions that cause shortness of breath (emphysema), lung injury, and those who are struggling to breathe optimally due to other medical conditions.

Respiratory Therapists manage the use of ventilators and implement various treatments such as providing oxygen and giving medication to the lungs. They also monitor response to treatment, measure the lung function of patients and perform critical procedures such as inserting airway tubes to assist with breathing or performing lung scopes for diagnosis and treatment. They educate patients and their families to aid their understanding of the disease process and treatments administered.

To practise as a Respiratory Therapist, you will require a Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide clinical respiratory services.

1. Perform complete or modified patient respiratory assessment as required on an ongoing basis.
2. Consult with physicians and other health care professionals regarding the patient status and care plans.
3. Monitor patient's progress and modify respiratory care plan as needed.
4. Participate in the multidisciplinary patient rounds and conferences.
5. Document procedures, organize and analyze data, and maintain accurate records.
6. Adhere to hospital and department operating procedures in the delivery of respiratory services.
7. Provide diagnostic and therapeutic services, emergency services, and other procedures. These are:

You will work with a team of healthcare professionals to provide basic and advanced cardiorespiratory support to patients. This includes administering care to patients in the intensive care units and general wards, initiating and titrating assisted ventilation, maintaining a range of ventilatory modes and ventilators, as well as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and providing support in airway procedures. In addition, you will provide patient education and counselling as well as basic maintenance and troubleshooting of respiratory equipment.

Broad Function

To provide high level of respiratory care services to all patients in the hospital involving critical care, and to coordinate and participate in a variety of duties involved in the operation and maintenance of pulmonary and polysomnography equipment to provide detained analysis of pulmonary physiology tests and polysomnography tests.

Key Responsibilities

1. Assess, monitor and adjust parameters and evaluate patients on invasive, non-invasive mechanical ventilation and advanced mode of ventilation.
2. Perform respiratory care procedures e.g. tracheobronchial suction and assist in procedures e.g. bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy.
3. Assess and evaluate patients referred for respiratory therapy services.
4. Assist with the intra-hospital transport of mechanically ventilated patients and respiratory care equipment maintenance in ward.
5. Provides caregivers' training for patients requiring long-term respiratory care and CPAP counselling services, information on polysomnography and pulmonary physiology tests.
6. Perform routine pulmonary physiology tests, exercise testing, polysomnography test, ambulatory sleep test, pulse oximetry study, manual scoring of polysomnography test, and assessment on validity of pulmonary physiology tests.
7. Generate and dispatch accurate reports.
8. Maintain record of reports and patients records in departmental database.
9. Schedule test appointments and follow up appointments as needed.
10. Perform of routine calibration and maintenance of equipment to ensure accurate and reliable assessment and diagnosis; troubleshooting errors when variances arise.
11. Check, maintain and manage inventory stock.
12. Assist and participate in clinical research activities in the department.
13. Participate in Quality Improvement projects as assigned.
14. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
15. Be actively involved in hospital's projects and functions and participate in community outreach programs.
16. Uphold and maintain a culture of patient-centered care and safety.

Requirements

1. Degree in Respiratory Therapy with a minimum of 2 years working experiences in the Intensive Care Unit of a recognized hospital.
2. Respiratory Therapist credentials in the country of training and licensure.
3. BCLS certificate (Required)
4. ACLS certificate (Preferred)
5. Preferred, if not, at least one of the following should be attained within two years of employment:
6. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or
7. Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT)
8. Required to work in rotating shifts (day/night) as needed.
9. Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint needed.
10. Should be able to work independently as well as in a team setting.
