Anatomical Molecular Laboratory (ATOM) is a laboratory under the Department of Anatomical Pathology in Singapore General Hospital. The laboratory performs clinical profiling of cancers using next generation sequencing platforms and is also equipped to perform more conventional PCR based molecular assays. Besides clinical testing of patients' samples, ATOM (formerly known as the Translation Pathology Centre) also actively collaborates with other partners in translational research of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will be required to conduct laboratory tests, specialised investigations, assist in quality control programs, development of translational assays and participate in the training of other technologists. Duties will include (but not limited to) the following:

• Perform analysis and specialised investigations
• Analyse sequencing data
• Establish, implement and monitor quality control programs
• Timely preparation of reagents and laboratory materials
• Assist in development and validation of research essays for translation into clinical use
• Assist in operation and maintenance of equipment used for specialised tests in the laboratory
• Provide support for collaborative research projects through active participation and literature search in the relevant topics
• Maintain good records of all experimental data, appropriate charts and tables
• Candidates with more experience in the relevant areas may be considered for a senior position.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor in Life Sciences, Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology or related discipline
• Preferably with 1 to 2 years' experience in diagnostic / research laboratory setting. Knowledge of molecular assays / techniques would be an added advantage but on-the-job training will be provided.

JOB PURPOSE

The Medical Laboratory Technologist role involves analysis of specimens from patients for the purposes of diagnosis, prevention, prognosis, and treatment of disease. The specimens include blood, urine, other body fluids, and tissue. The Medical Laboratory Technologist supports Junior Medical Laboratory Technologists, Senior Medical Laboratory Scientists, and pathologists in the total test process (pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical).

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific

iv. Maintain inventory according to lean management practices.

v. Obtain information from medical history (including previous laboratory investigations) relevant to interpretation of current test results.

vi. Ensure that processing of specimens is performed in compliance with protocols, accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.

vii. Provide training, competency assessment, and supervision of junior medical technologists, medical technologists, and phlebotomists (where applicable).

viii. Assessing patient needs, reviewing patient history, and determining the reason(s) for drawing blood.

ix. Preparing specimens for transportation, including labelling of sample tubes vials accurately.

x. Coordinate initial orientation, training and competency testing for all new phlebotomy staff.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Laboratory Technologist (Core Laboratory) assists the Senior Medical Technologists and Medical Technologists in receiving specimens in the laboratory and in performing patient testing, quality control and instrument maintenance.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(A) SPECIFIC (85%)

1. Perform specimen reception and order entry.
2. Perform Quality Control on laboratory analysers under the supervision of a Medical Technologist.
3. Perform routine patient testing under the supervision of a Medical Technologist.
4. Ensure the laboratory meets the expected turn-around-time.
5. Perform rotating shift and night duties.
6. Perform maintenance on laboratory analysers
7. Ensure the work area remains clean and tidy after use.
8. Strictly adhere to all laboratory safety policies.
9. Assist Medical Technologist/Senior Medical Technologist/Principal Medical Technologist in maintaining the inventory according to lean practices.
10. Assist Medical Technologist/Senior Medical Technologist/Principal Medical Technologist in preparing the laboratory for audits.
11. Be involved in the Laboratory Quality Management Program and Quality Improvement initiatives.

(B) GENERAL (15%)
