JOB PURPOSE
The Medical Laboratory Technologist role involves analysis of specimens from patients for the purposes of diagnosis, prevention, prognosis, and treatment of disease. The specimens include blood, urine, other body fluids, and tissue. The Medical Laboratory Technologist supports Junior Medical Laboratory Technologists, Senior Medical Laboratory Scientists, and pathologists in the total test process (pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical).
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific
i. Perform, verify and validate testing of specimens from patients.
ii. Perform calibration, validation, and preventive maintenance on laboratory analysers and other laboratory equipment.
iii. Perform and certify quality control of laboratory analysers, including point-of-care testing devices (where applicable). Perform testing of specimens from quality assurance programme surveys.
iv. Maintain inventory according to lean management practices.
v. Obtain information from medical history (including previous laboratory investigations) relevant to interpretation of current test results.
vi. Ensure that processing of specimens is performed in compliance with protocols, accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
vii. Provide training, competency assessment, and supervision of junior medical technologists, medical technologists, and phlebotomists (where applicable).
viii. Assessing patient needs, reviewing patient history, and determining the reason(s) for drawing blood.
ix. Preparing specimens for transportation, including labelling of sample tubes vials accurately.
x. Coordinate initial orientation, training and competency testing for all new phlebotomy staff.
xi. Perform specimen reception, order entry and other duties in laboratory, as assigned.
General
i. Perform duties in a professional manner, commensurate with academic and technical skills and training.
ii. Adhere to laws, regulations, and hospital procedures and policies.
iii. Uphold the visions and practices of Woodlands Health.

Requirements:
• PhD in a relevant discipline (biomedical science, bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or related field)
• Masters in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience
• Degree in Biomedical Science, Biological Science, Medical Technology or equivalent with minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
• Good command of English, communications and interpersonal skills are important
• Proficiency in scripting and statistical language (eg Perl, Python, R, particularly in the use of packages such as biopython).

Technical role:
Liaise with different sub-specialist Pathologists and N2CR members on the consolidation of materials and annotation of tissues for Tissue Microarrays (TMAs) construction and its map.
Searching (with clinician input) for relevant pathology cases, retrieving and choosing blocks, assisting the Pathologist with tissue annotation
Provide relevant histological services (e.g. microtomy) for the N2CR members as and when is required
Staff must be able to trim the FFPE block to expose the tissue surface for the construction of TMA.
Operationalise consent and prospective sample collection for biopsy, organoid, PDX development; targeting serial or longitudinal samples and data
Admin role:
Assist in lab management (Archive and inventoried constructed TMA blocks – tumour library)
Uphold research integrity and ensure safety compliance
Act as a Liaison among TR, NUS Ex-Path, and N2CR Programme Admin Lead for requesting Pathology FFPE Tissues and tracking for consumables purchases and equipment maintenance (TMA machine).
To keep careful records of all tissue samples curated and respective requestors including clinical collaborators and N2CR members
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in life sciences, biomedical sciences, biochemistry or equivalent from an accredited University.
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in a field related to histology, molecular biology, anatomy or biomedical research will be considered favourably.
- Experience in tissue microarrays would be an asset
