Meta’s global network is built with cutting edge platforms and technologies and we are looking for a Marine Engineering Specialist to join the backbone Optical Network Engineering team. This team is responsible for designing, building, and operating the world’s largest optical network. In this role, you will have a unique opportunity to shape the future of how we design Meta’s global subsea network at scale making use of the latest technologies.This role includes leading technical elements of subsea cable build programs, from project definition through system lay, acceptance and operations. The specialist works collaboratively with various internal teams to understand Meta’s network performance requirements and leads marine engineering for new and ongoing submarine cable projects. Marine Engineering Specialists at Meta often serve as technical leads and chairs for major cable programs, such as the 2Africa program, which was one of the largest, most complex subsea cable systems ever built. This role will require international business travel.
Work collaboratively with various internal teams to understand Meta’s network requirements and global growth needs, ensuring seamless integration for submarine cable projects
Lead marine engineering efforts for new and ongoing submarine cable projects including desktop assessments, route engineering and overseeing survey, loading, and lay operations
Conduct detailed reviews of technical contract specifications and deliverables covering the many multidisciplinary aspects of submarine cable & marine engineering
Provide engineering support for operations & maintenance activities of in-service submarine cable systems, ensuring optimal performance and reliability
Lead marine working group activities to ensure high quality on-time delivery of engineering solutions by system suppliers
Maintain detailed technical documentation and records of submarine cable systems, during planning, deployment, and maintenance phases. Share knowledge and best practices with the broader team to drive continuous improvement
Identify and manage opportunities for marine operational quality improvements
Minimum Qualifications
BA/BS or equivalent work experience in related field
6+ years of experience in marine engineering
Technical knowledge of marine engineering, operations, testing and maintenance of submarine cables
Knowledge of cable lay dynamics, with the capacity to analyse cable installation data to identify anomalies, assess installation quality, and optimise cable laying operations
Understanding of marine geophysical and geotechnical data acquisition, processing and charting, and applicability to cable burial prospects
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of cable route engineering, including route planning, permitting, and risk assessment
Knowledge of wet plant marine installation qualification processes
Experience with survey and installation techniques, including deployment methodologies and vessel operations
Knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques for submarine cable systems, including fault location and repair
Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and/or specialised cable route planning software such as products (e.g., MakaiPlan/QGIS/Esri ArcGIS/Global Mapper) for cable route design and optimisation
Experience working offshore on cable route survey and installation vessels
Experience sourcing and managing offshore customer representatives onboard vessels
Familiarity with quality assurance principles and quality management systems such as ISO9001
Experience in submarine cable construction activities
Experience working with turnkey submarine system suppliers
Capacity to negotiate technical elements of contracts. Must be analytical and results focused
Familiarity of the relationship between submarine cable design, routing & protection and successful operations and maintenance, with experience in providing engineering support during operational phases
Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
Proven experience effectively working in a global team environment, with solid communication and project management skills
