We are hiring an Associate Support Engineer to build a career with Canonical and support the technical needs of customers leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. This role is an opportunity for a hands-on engineer with eagerness to learn, a passion for Linux and open source technologies to work with some of the best people in the industry at Canonical.

We regularly solve interesting, technical problems. From triaging complex cloud environments, desktop and server issues, Linux kernel crashes we've never seen before to OS configuration issues and root cause analysis, we provide an expert level of support and satisfaction to our peer groups and customers. You will be accountable for delivering an outstanding technical support experience on the full technical stack at Canonical, across cloud, desktop and IoT. From problem qualification to full resolution, you will own and manage your cases. When needed, you will transfer your cases to your colleagues or involve senior engineers. This is a globally remote role.

The role entails

  • Working from your remote home office to provide technical support for employees.
  • Being available to take ownership of new cases via telephone, email and web
  • Acting as an internal customer advocate keeping them updated in a timely manner
  • Ensuring that each support case owned by you is handled according to our Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the highest possible customer satisfaction by setting the right expectations and fulfilling your commitments.
  • Contributing new knowledge base articles and maintaining existing articles, ensuring shared knowledge and lessons learned are available to customers.
  • Drafting and distributing technical notices for internal and external communication.
  • Prioritising your work in order to accomplish the most important and urgent tasks first
  • Keeping on learning as our products and services grow and evolve
  • Understanding Ubuntu development process to be able to set customer expectations correctly on timeline for a fix
  • Maintaining regular communication and information exchange with the rest of the team, locally and remotely
  • Identifying and suggesting any opportunities to provide a better service
  • Participating in a regular weekend working rotation

What we are looking for in you

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path. Preferable majors: Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering, etc.
  • Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation
  • Track record of going above-and-beyond expectations to achieve outstanding results
  • Experience with Linux troubleshooting (collecting logs and stack traces, fine-tuning by editing configuration files)
  • Knowledge or basic hands-on experience on 2 or more of:
    • Linux server administration
    • Programming fundamentals in any language (bash, Perl, Ruby, Javascript, C or C++, Go)
    • Networking (bonding, firewalling, bridging, switching, network file system tuning, MTU issues, etc.)
    • Virtualization / Cloud computing concepts (provisioning, monitoring, orchestration, etc.)
  • Ability to learn quickly, thrive on change and handle the pressure of a customer facing job
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Appreciative of diversity, polite and effective in a multi-cultural, multi-national organisation
  • Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year, for company events up to two weeks long

Key Responsibilities

  • IT Support (Tech Ops):
    • Act as the first point of contact for IT-related issues (hardware/software/networking).
    • Set up new workstations, email IDs, and access credentials for employees.
    • Coordinate with external IT vendors for repairs, AMC, and procurement.
    • Maintain records of devices, software licenses, and system configurations.
    • Troubleshoot connectivity issues, printer/scanner problems, and routine system glitches.
    • Support virtual meetings, conference calls, and internal tech tools.
    • Ensure basic cybersecurity practices are followed (firewalls, antivirus, backups).
  • Admin Operations:
    • Manage office supplies, pantry stock, and stationery requirements.

    • Handle vendor relationships - AMC, couriers, utilities, etc.
    • Support travel and logistics for employees/visitors.
    • Assist with organizing team events, meetings, and celebrations.
    • Oversee facility-related checklists, visitor logs, and admin SOPs.
    • Track expenses related to admin/IT functions and share monthly MIS.

Seeking experienced Linux Level 2 Support Engineer to join on 1 yr project renewable assignment at Ang Mo Kio.

Office hours

Offer Package : up to S$7500+ 1 month Performance Bonus + S$30 HP Claim monthly

What you will do:

Administer and support Linux-based servers (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.) in production and enterprise environments

• Perform OS patching, kernel updates, and third-party application updates (e.g., Java, OpenSSL)

• Manage daily health checks for system performance, services, and backup statuses

• Administer and monitor NetBackup – verify daily jobs, conduct restore exercises, and upgrade backup agents

• Manage and troubleshoot Linux-based antivirus solutions and updates.

• Configure and troubleshoot services such as SSH, SFTP, and syslog

• Manage logical volumes, disk partitions, and file systems.

• Monitor system performance and resource usage using tools like top, iostat, vmstat, sar, and netstat.

• Maintain and manage Apache, Tomcat, or web servers – including installation, upgrade, and configuration.

• Administer crontab jobs and ensure scheduled tasks run successfully

• Manage system logging and integration with centralized logging (e.g., Splunk)

• Review system logs daily to identify performance bottlenecks, errors, or security events.

• Ensure secure system configurations and compliance with organizational security policies.

• Participate in vulnerability management and remediation of Linux security advisories (e.g., CVEs).

• Perform regular backup restore tests to validate recovery procedures.

• Maintain internal documentation and standard operating procedures for support tasks.

• Participate in on-call rotations and scheduled after-hours maintenance when required

What we are looking for :

Technical Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of Linux distributions (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Oracle Linux)
  • Min 3-5 yrs in similiar jobscope
  • Experience with patching tools (e.g., yum, dnf, apt, or automation via Ansible/YUM repos)
  • NetBackup administration – job monitoring, agent installation, and recovery operations

Solid command-line skills and proficiency in bash shell scripting

  • Knowledge of system performance monitoring tools (top, htop, vmstat, iostat, free, etc.)
  • Experience with antivirus tools on Linux and updating mechanisms.
  • User/group management via /etc/passwd, /etc/group, usermod, chage, and integration.
  • Service management using systemd, chkconfig, and legacy init.d scripts
  • Apache, Tomcat, or Nessus server administration – configuration, upgrades, and logs
  • LVM and disk partitioning tools (lsblk, fdisk, parted, pvcreate, lvcreate, etc.)
  • Log management using rsyslog, journalctl, and integration with Splunk.
  • Experience with cron jobs and automation of routine system tasks.
  • Basic firewall and SELinux troubleshooting
  • Exposure to tools like Ansible (preferred).
  • Understanding of security hardening, vulnerability remediation, and CVE patching.
  • Possessing RHCSA, RHCE, or LFCS is at an advantage
