Job Description
The Head of Cytology Department plays a pivotal role in leading and managing the cytology laboratory team to ensure high-quality services. This involves overseeing technical and administrative operations, developing policies and procedures, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Management:
- Provide strategic direction to the Cytology Department.
- Supervise cytology staff, including technologists, technicians, and support staff.
- Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and teamwork within the department
Technical Operations:
- Oversee the technical operations of the cytology department, including specimen receipt, processing, and analysis.
- Prepare stains, mount slides, and microscopically study cells from the human body to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities, and other pathological conditions.
- Performs specialized and complex testing that involves microscopic screening and evaluation of gynaecological and non-gynaecological specimens.
- Prepares specimens for examination, utilizing appropriate laboratory techniques and protocols. Classifies cells according to established categories. Determines whether cells are abnormal and whether slide should be reviewed and examined by Pathologists.
- Ensure the quality and accuracy of cytology results.
- Knowledge of both Conventional & Liquid-based systems (Thin Prep).
- Accurately records all appropriate specimen and results data.
- Assures individual specimen turnaround times are consistent with overall laboratory expectations
- Performs other related duties as required.
Administrative Operations:
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional affiliations.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the department.
- Adheres to compliance with established administrative laboratory policies and procedures.
- Maintain compliance with requirements of laboratory safety, OSHA, assurance accreditation under ISO15189, and future CAP Accreditation.
Requirements:
- Degree in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry or relevant qualifications.
- 5-6 years' relevant experience with Certified cytotechnologist by Cytotechnology
- Must possess International Academy of Cytology certification;
- Able to work under time pressure with accuracy and meeting expected required turnaround-time for cases.
- Must be a team player.

- Strong problem-solving skills and a detail-oriented approach with the ability to analyse complex data and derive insights.
