Tamil Murasu is seeking an experienced Visual Journalist to join our newsroom. You will work with journalists and sub-editors to create original data visualisations and graphics content based on researched data, enhancing readers' engagement. You must identify potential ideas for content and search for appropriate verified data to visualise into graphics that simplify complex ideas into visuals.
Responsibilities include:
Collaborate with journalists and sub-editors to understand the requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle, or product request.
Use reliable data visualisation tools to represent the harvested data and support the content.
Collaborate with the editorial team to ensure that interactive graphics are user-friendly, responsive, and accessible across various devices.
Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
Conduct research alongside writers to find/verify data sources.
Layout pages in an engaging manner to enhance reader interaction.
Job Requirements
Degree or Diploma in a relevant course in Visual Communications or similar qualification.
At least two years of relevant experience.
Able to articulate ideas visually.
Proficiency with data visualisation and interactive web design platforms.
Proficiency in English and Tamil languages.

About the Role
Singapore's premier business daily, The Business Times, is looking for a talented, driven and digitally-savvy candidate to oversee the opinion and features sections. You will commission pieces that reflect the issues and topics of the day, with the aim of providing a spectrum of perspectives. This position requires a background in commentary writing and copyediting, as well as an understanding of geopolitical sensitivities. You will work with other journalists and contributors on stories, assisting with the flow and logic of their arguments, as well as ensuring the required context is presented. You will also curate articles from external content pools, cutting across a range of news topics and geographies that will be relevant to the business and financial communities.
The ideal candidate should have experience in business journalism, is a news junkie and has an understanding of Singapore’s political and cultural contexts. The candidate should have experience working in a cross-generational newsroom of content producers, including writers, visual artists, sub-editors, and social media specialists.
Job Requirements
Relevant degree in economics, business, finance, political science or any relevant fields
At least 8 years of reporting and writing experience, preferably with an emphasis on economics, politics or international relations. Experience in the opinion section of a reputable newspaper or media organisation would be a plus.
Familiarity with Singapore's stance, contexts and trade-offs on subjects of national interests including, but not limited to, economic and social issues
Ability to work with a network of contributors and freelancers
Strong command of written and spoken English, with a high proficiency in copyediting and crafting digital headlines. Familiarity with an Asian language is a plus but not compulsory.

About the Role
You will be part of The Straits Times Visualisation team that drives and implements an audience-first strategy in the newsroom, finding innovative ways to showcase and amplify content to various audiences across different platforms. As a Deputy to Interactive Graphics Editor, you will lead the digital graphics design team to consistently deliver creative editorial projects across multiple platforms of The Straits Times. You will be responsible for generating ideas to create graphics, conduct research, and identify relationships and trends in data. The candidate will collaborate with the newsroom to drive more visual and interactive storytelling, manage and produce interactive graphics, and identify appropriate stories and topics for daily graphics and long-term projects.
Responsibilities
Write, design and help the team's developers build visual stories for the newsroom, including data visualisations and a wide variety of visual formats for storytelling.
Carry out investigative journalism/research with journalists using data, including finding/verifying data sources.
Use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling. Access APIs or external data sources where necessary.
Manage workflow and process for data-driven and visual stories in the newsroom.
Use analytics to evaluate stories and propose changes to workflow and concepts.
Represent the Graphics department at news meetings.
Oversee and art direct a staff of designers and developers.
Work with the social media team to promote graphics.
Organise schedules and information for each project, ensuring that artwork delivery deadlines are met.
Job Requirement
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, graphic design, data science, statistics or computer science.
Prior experience in the media industry would be advantageous.
Comfortable in either two or more of the following: journalism and/or reporting; data visualisation and/or infographics design; front-end web development; or data analysis programming.
Experience building interactive graphics using libraries such as d3.js and Mapbox. Experience with serverless computing (AWS) is an advantage.
Experience with one or more common databases, SQL, scripting languages (R, Python, Perl) is preferred.
Familiar with the latest digital storytelling, data journalism and visual trends.
Strong knowledge of interaction design, layout, colour and typography.
A team player, willing to share and support other team members.
Attention to details, and demonstrate strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
Able to work on a flexible schedule, that may include nights or weekends.

About the Strategic Communications Unit (SCU)
