Job Description
Director of Research and Development to lead our Advanced Technology Research Centre. The role is consisting in leading and coordinating technical development and validation of new coating materials, processes/coating solutions and contribute to Plasma source developments according to roadmap defined with Chief Technology Officer (CTO) councils and Business Units head. Coating and characterization labs in Singapore will be under his responsibility and a strong collaboration with IEBU design department required. The role requires a Coating Expert for Industrial applications (Hard coatings: Nitride, DLC, oxides…) who is very familiar with plasma source development (Sputtering, ARC, PECVD sources) and related processes.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the organization’s technology roadmap, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Oversee the design, development, and validation of high-performance coating technologies and processes
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing R&D teams in Singapore (engineers & technicians)
- Collaborate with Universities, Corp Lab or industry partners on novel thin-film solutions (e.g., tribological, optical, or antimicrobial coatings).
- Responsible for Coating and Characterization labs in Singapore
- Manage end-to-end project execution, monitor (KPIs) progress and ensuring timely delivery within budget.
- Identify and evaluate emerging Coating Technologies to maintain competitive advantage
- Collaborate with CTO council, Sales and Marketing, Executives of each BU, and Customers to deliver solutions that meet market demands.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Ensure technology solutions comply with industry standards, security policies, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
Education & Experience
- Advanced degree (preferred PhD) in (Plasma) Physics or related field .
- 10+ years of hands-on PVD process development
- Proven experience with Industrial PVD equipment and vacuum systems.
Technical Expertise
- Deep knowledge of thin-film growth mechanisms , Plasma physics , Plasma sources and surface pre and post treatment.
- Proficiency in metallurgy, tribology, or corrosion mechanisms, optics for coating applications.
- Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO) and regulatory compliance (e.g., automotive, semiconductor, decorative solutions).
Leadership & Soft Skills
- Ability to bridge R&D and manufacturing with a pragmatic approach.
- Strong project management and data-driven decision-making.
- Excellent communication for cross-functional teams (engineers, operators, executives).
Qualifications
- Experience with Arc evaporation, Magnetron Sputtering and PECVD or other coating technologies .
- Knowledge of CAD/CAM or CFD modeling for plasma processes .
- Patents or publications in surface engineering .

ORGANISATION PROFILE
The Singapore Population Health Studies (SPHS) is a population-based health research initiative at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore. SPHS aims to investigate the interactions between lifestyle, physiological, genetic and other omics biomarkers and their impact on health and longevity. In addition, SPHS will serve as a platform to monitor risk factors in the population and gain insight into determinants of health-related behaviours. For this purpose, SPHS includes over 50,000 adult Singaporeans and long-term residents from three major ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, and Indian), for a better understanding of disease aetiology in urban Asian settings, and the development of improved preventive and therapeutic measures for Singapore and other Asian populations.
JOB PURPOSE
This role primarily involves the recruitment and data collection activities of the public health research projects under the SPHS unit that will contribute towards the building of a population health biobank for Singapore.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Inviting target participants as defined above to take part in the relevant study by phone call or messaging;
2. Screening their eligibility for the study and making an appointment with them for the study procedures;
3. Provide logistical information for the interview and study site visit;
4. Manage participant flow at the study site visit and verify the participants' survey completion status;
5. Explaining the information in the study consent documents to the extent that the consent, if given, would be informed and voluntary;
6. Obtaining participants’ consent before beginning any study procedures;
7. Interview participants according to the e-questionnaire and entering the responses accurately to the e-questionnaire via a tablet;
8. Timely completion of interview and registration of participants for their study site visit procedures before the cut-off time;
9. Timely preparation of required material and equipment for the study site visits;
10. Organise work outputs to be handed over to the QC supervisor; and
11. Any other responsibilities as required by future research projects.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Post-secondary qualifications with a good command of spoken English and Malay/Tamil/Mandarin/Cantonese/Hokkien/Teochew (to conduct interview with health research participants in local ethnic languages)
At least 1 year of customer-facing work experience.
Monthly salary ranges between $2,300 - $2,900.
Work hours are: 7.30am to 5.00pm on Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri; 7.30am to 12.30pm on either Sat or Wed depending on operation days of the study site.
Confident in using a tablet for data entry, retrieve and update records.
