Job Summary:

The Chartering Manager – Dry Bulk is responsible for managing and executing the chartering of dry bulk vessels (Handysize to Supramax) on spot and period contracts. Key Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Vessel Fixing & Negotiation
  • Source cargoes and match with suitable tonnage (owned or chartered).

  • Handle pre- and post-fixture activities to ensure smooth execution.
  • Draft, review, and finalize charter party agreements (e.g., GENCON , NYPE , SYNACOMEX , etc.).
2. Dry Bulk Market Monitoring
  • Track global dry bulk markets, focusing on commodities like coal, iron ore, grains, bauxite, and fertilizers.

  • Use data to provide freight forecasts and identify strategic opportunities.
3. Relationship Management
  • Develop and maintain relationships with cargo owners, traders, shipowners, and chartering brokers.

4. Operational Coordination

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Recognise and understand all port restrictions and specific 'country' requirements for the various trades Swire Bulk is operating in, and/or vessels trading to the region – port drafts, LOA restrictions, beam restrictions, terms of trade.

Trade and Relationship Management (Winning Customer Relationships):

  • Manage, develop, and expand relationships with customers and brokers.
  • Develop an effective network by traveling in Asia and the Pacific to build and own customer relationships.
  • Identify and communicate new trends, cargo routes, mines, processing locations, potential new customers, and cargo sources/destinations.
  • Approve all c/p's with zero errors to ensure they can be executed by management.

Charter In (Financial Success and Operational Excellence):

  • In conjunction with the management team, analyze, plan, and prepare the execution of the forward cargo book. Where necessary, charter third-party tonnage from the market to execute the cargo book, maximizing the financial success of the voyage while maintaining and managing operational excellence and expanding enduring partnerships with customers.

Middle Office Functions (Operational Excellence):

  • Manage, examine, and own all necessary information in the IMOS operating system for incumbent voyages – communicating clearly any variances and identifying solutions.
  • Communicate with the operations department to ensure a smooth operation of all voyages/TCTs, maximizing revenue and profit.
  • Challenge assumptions to maximize the efficiency of sea voyages (routing/slow steaming).
  • Document all negotiations correctly.
  • Manage, in conjunction with the finance department, freight payments, ensuring they are prepared accurately and communicated in a timely manner to customers.
  • Liaise with operations (internal) on all parameters of the voyage to ensure smooth execution, maximizing financial success.

Management Reporting + Procedures and Standards (Operational Excellence):

  • Strictly implement procedures for executing fixtures, monitoring, and reporting on vessel performances, and communicating underlying variances.
  • Enforce operating procedures to comply with the highest standards in Swire Bulk operating areas.
  • Understand and communicate relevant information on changing legislation directly affecting Swire Bulk business from agents, ports, brokers, and customers.
  • Communicate with the technical/operational departments regarding 'owned' voyages and challenge fleet assumptions.
  • Assist with the preparation of weekly and monthly management reporting.

Crisis Management

  • Make every effort to be aware of and understand your role in the event of a crisis.
  • Make every effort to attend any relevant training, simulations and or meetings relating to Crisis Management.
  • Perform your role as best as possible in a calm and collaborative manner in line with the relevant policy and procedures in the event of a Crisis.
  • Provide input and feedback towards the ongoing improvement of the Crisis Management framework and procedure.

Safety

  • Challenging and stopping unsafe acts and behaviours or unsafe conditions.

Key Qualifications & Skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree holder

Technical Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of chartering experience in dry bulk shipping
  • Brokerage and/or operations experience preferred

Professional Skills

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and make commercial decisions within delegated authority
  • Strong collaborative teamwork skills
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Proficient in system management and maintain data accuracy in documentation and reporting
