A Research Assistant position is available in the laboratory of Professor Julien Lescar at SBS.
Key Responsibilities:
- Protein expression and purification in E. coli system.
- Macromolecule functional characterization and other binding analysis experiments.
- Structural studies using X-Ray crystallography and Cryo-EM (sample preparation, sample screening, data collection and data processing).
- Assist in drafting research proposals and manuscripts.
- Assist in general lab activities, including but not limited to safety and risk assessment, equipment maintenance, procurement and other related duties.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related fields.
- Basic knowledge and hands-on experience with molecular cloning, protein expression, and purification techniques is highly preferred.
- Experience in X-Ray crystallography and Cryo-EM is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Passion for scientific research and innovation.

Synthetic Biology TRP – Research Fellow
The Synthetic Biology Translational Research Programme (TRP) focuses on engineering red blood cells for therapeutic applications, including drug delivery, immune modulation, and gene therapy. We are developing novel erythrocyte-based platforms that leverage the unique properties of RBCs for synthetic biology and biomedical innovation.
We invite applications for a highly motivated Research Fellow (RF) to work closely with the Principal Investigator and a multidisciplinary team. The position is offered on an initial one-year contract, renewable subject to performance and funding. A Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology, synthetic biology, or a related field is required.
Key Responsibilities- RBC Genomics and TranscriptomicsAnalyze gene expression and genomic regulation of erythroid differentiation.
Characterize key transcriptional and epigenetic programs governing RBC development and function.
- RBC Engineering and Expression SystemsDevelop workflows for genetic modification of erythroid progenitors and immortalized RBC lines.
Optimize lentiviral and non-viral gene delivery systems to express therapeutic payloads in RBCs.
- Protein Loading and Display in RBCsEngineer red blood cells to load or surface-display proteins, peptides, or other biologics.

Red Blood Cell Engineering Experience
- Hands-on experience with primary erythroid cultures, immortalized erythroid progenitor cell lines, or ex vivo RBC production systems.
- Skilled in flow cytometry, magnetic separation, and enucleation assays for erythroid lineage tracking and quality control.
- Familiarity with ethical guidelines and biosafety considerations in handling blood-derived materials and genetically modified cells.
Synthetic Biology Skills for RBC Platforms
- Proficiency in genetic construct design, vector engineering, and transgene integration for expression in erythroid cells.
- Experience with protein or nucleic acid loading strategies in mature RBCs or erythroid precursors.
- Competence in troubleshooting gene expression systems and optimizing yield, stability, and functional output of engineered RBCs.
Experimental Design & Execution
- Ability to design and conduct RNA/protein expression analyses, enzymatic assays, and studies of RNA chemical modifications.

The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of structural biology and biomedical science, with a particular emphasis on NMR spectroscopy and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research on corneal amyloids, including their structural characterization using advanced techniques such as NMR and cryo-EM.

Join the laboratory of Lei Lu at the School of Biological Sciences, where we are seeking a motivated and talented Research Fellow to contribute to an exciting project focused on the endocytic trafficking of lipid nanoparticles.
Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have gained global attention, especially with their approval for mRNA vaccine delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, saving millions of lives worldwide. Beyond vaccines, LNPs hold immense potential as delivery vehicles for various therapeutic nucleic acids, offering promising treatment strategies for many diseases. Despite their enormous success, the intracellular transport of LNPs — how they move within mammalian cells and deliver their nucleic acid payloads — remains poorly understood.
As part of our team, the candidate will use advanced light microscopy to explore and elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing the endocytic trafficking and intracellular delivery of LNPs. This project aims to deepen our understanding of these mechanisms, contributing to the optimization of LNP-based therapies.
Job Description

The main responsibilities of the position include:
- Mammalian cell culture research and imaging of epigenetic marks at individual loc
- Epigenetic drug inhibition studies followed by molecular and cellular assays
