About Outward Bound Singapore
Outward Bound Singapore (OBS), a division of NYC, is part of a worldwide adventure-based training network in more than 30 countries. We are a leader in outdoor education and have developed more than 500,000 youths over the past 50 years through outdoor programmes. We do not merely impart outdoor skills and knowledge; we seek to inspire individuals and transform communities. Utilising adventure education as a pedagogy, our programmes aim to inspire youths to start a journey of self-discovery, and build confidence and resilience. Our staff have an affinity for the outdoors and passion for developing people.
The Medical Services and Training Unit (MST) runs medical centres across OBS' campuses and deals with all emergencies, injuries and illnesses of OBS' participants and staff. The Senior Outdoor Nurse Practitioner (ONP) assesses and treats patients out at sea, in the field, and medical centre. MST also performs pre-enrolment screening to ensure that all participants are safe to join OBS activities. As part of the outdoor adventure industry, MST conducts and provides wilderness medicine courses to OBS' operational staff and regional partners.
We are seeking a Senior Outdoor Nurse Practitioner to join the NYC/OBS family.
As a Senior Outdoor Nurse Practitioner, you will be part of the MST unit to ensure the efficient operations of the OBS Medical Centre by providing timely and effective first-line medical care to participants and staff. You will be expected to perform 24 hours duties, night shifts, and be on standby outside office hours with 1-hour activation to site. You must also be comfortable to work independently and provide medical care in remote/ austere work environments (across OBS campuses on Pulau Ubin or mainland, at overseas expeditions, in the field, or at sea). In view of such work environments, you must be prepared to trek in jungles, carry heavy loads and equipment (up to 20kg), manoeuvre stretchers (with casualties) across rugged terrain, be exposed to outdoor nature elements, and have water-confidence in the sea.
You will additionally be expected to lead various projects in medical training, quality improvement (data and research driven), operational capability development, or other administrative/corporate matters (including budgeting and procurement). Such projects entail working with other NYC/OBS units, other government agencies, vendors, and industry partners. Experience in a managerial or leadership position and having an innovative mind will thus be highly advantageous.
You will be exposed and hone your skills in these areas:
- Applying your medical skills and knowledge in a vastly different environment from hospitals or clinics. Working in the field will challenge your medical proficiency and ingenuity.
- Learning and practicing in austere, wilderness, pre-hospital medicine.
- Working with youths on a national outdoor adventure programme in a dynamic environment with a wide range of medical conditions to anticipate and care for.
- Dealing with adolescent health, population health policies, and pre-enrolment screening relating to Primary Health Care issues.
- Teaching, training, and designing curriculum.
- Conducting research and data analytics.
- Participating in overseas expedition opportunities with other Outward Bound Centers internationally.
Requirements:
- A Singapore Registered Nurse with Singapore Nursing Board.
